              Q. So what exactly do you do?

That's a fair question...but even more appropriate is, what do you NEED us to do?  We offer a variety of photo retouching and restoration services that include red-eye removal, color correction, water stain removal, stray hair removal, background adjustments, hand-coloring, alterations, scratch and tear repair, portrait enhancement, photo resizing (enlargements and reductions, duplication and that's just for photos!  We also do VHS home movies to DVD transfers, custom DVD slide-shows, custom screen-savers and much much more.  Please feel free to browse our Gallery to see the types of work we've done on photos.

              Q. Can I take my photo somewhere else and have prints or merchandise made?

Absolutely, it's your photo.  You have every right to distribute it as you see fit.  We would like to reserve the right however to perhaps use the before and after images on our website for promotional purposes only, but if you prefer we didn't, please let us know.

              Q. What about copyrights?

Olympia Digital Imaging can not be held responsible for copyright violations. When you send us an image, you are certifying that you are the copyright owner and/or you have the copyright owner's expressed permission to use, alter, and distribute the image.  As for video tapes,  we will not work on store-bought movies of any kind.  If you or another family member or friend shot the video using a home video camera, then we will work on it.  However, if it is of a pornographic nature, then we'll refuse to work on it.  To be completely clear: we will not work on photos or videos containing nudity of any kind.  No exceptions.  Don't even ask.

              Q. Ok, so how does the process work?

You can contact us via our phone number or via email.  If we can work on your project, or if you want us to work on your project (meaning a photo, video, screen-saver, etc.), then there are several ways you can proceed.  1) You can scan and email the photo to us.  2) You can package the photo carefully between two pieces of cardboard, tape the four sides of the cardboard together securely to keep the photo safe.  Seal it in a bubble-pak protective envelope of the appropriate size and mail it to us at the address listed on the bottom of our home page.  3) If you want to send us home videos to transfer to DVD, then please package them in larger-size bubble-wrap and securely tape the bubble-wrap so the tape(s) cannot slip out.  Then, box up the tapes securely in a sturdy cardboard box, address it to us and ship it via the carrier of your choice.  Once we are done with your project, your materials (photo(s) or tape(s)) will be returned to you, securely packaged, along with with the type and number of prints (for photos) or copies (for DVD) that you've ordered.

              Q. How do I get it printed?

We'll print as many copies of your photo as you request in your order, of whatever size(s) you've ordered.  An additional fee will likely be involved for prints of sizes 8x10 or larger.  You can print the picture (you'll receive it on CD, at no additional charge) on your own home printer as well, but it won't likely look as nice unless you have a professional digital photo printer.  There are also a number of online printing services on the web as well as digital printing services located at most major convenience stores.

              Q. I have to mail you a photo, how should I package it?

We recommend placing your photo in a photo mailer (available at the post office or most stationary or office supply stores) and we also recommend that you sandwich it between two pieces of cardboard and tape them together, particularly if the photo is very old, rare or damaged. Be sure that the cardboard extends about an inch in all directions beyond the size of the photo.

Olympia Digital Imaging makes every effort to ensure the safety of your order, however we can not be held responsible for damage that may occur from delivery services.  If your photo has significant personal value, we recommend insuring your package.

              Q. My photo or video really means a lot to me, will it be safe?

Absolutely.  Olympia Digital Imaging makes every effort to ensure the safety and security of your treasured memories.  Rest assured, your photo or video will be treated with the respect and care that it deserves, as if it were one of our own.

              Q. My photos are private, will everyone be able to see them?

We would like to be able to use your photo(s) on our website, for promotional purposes only, but if you would prefer that don't, please just let us know either via email or phone.  We respect your privacy and if you don't want us to use your photo on our site, we will honor your request.

Olympia Digital Imaging does not share your photos, images and graphics with anyone or provide information about your photos, unless required to do so to satisfy any law, regulation, governmental request, or judicial order or in the event that Olympia Digital Imaging reasonably determines that disclosure is essential to protect itself, its customers or third-parties from physical or financial harm that may result from unlawful or dangerous conduct.  However, as stated in a prior question in this FAQ, Olympia Digital Imaging does not and will not work on any projects, photo or video, that contains nudity of any kind whatsoever.  This is company policy and there are no exceptions.

              Q. I don't like junkmail and spam. Are you going to sell my information to third-parties?

No.  As a company, it is our policy to keep your information private, we do not sell, trade, or distribute your personal information to third-parties or outside vendors.  Only when required by local, state, or federal law, will Olympia Digital Imaging ever disclose any of your personal information.

              Q. How big should I send my file? What's this "resolution" thing?

You should always send the largest file that you have.  This ensures the highest reproduction quality and the best quality of work when restoring or retouching photos.

Resolution refers to the number of dots of ink per inch (dpi) in a printed photo or the number of electronic pixels per inch (ppi) in a digital file. A typical picture off of the internet has a low resolution and will not reproduce anywhere near as well as a traditional photograph will.  Photos that have low resolution may look fine on the computer screen but will often appear fuzzy when printed.

Digital cameras vary greatly in quality.  Generally, if the camera is set to the "high-quality" setting, you'll be assured great results if it's a relatively new camera, say, no more than 3-5 years old.  Technology changes rapidly.

Ideally, you should submit your photo at the final size you would like it, at 300 dpi in RGB color mode.  Questions?  Simply send us your picture and we will contact you with any concerns regarding quality.

              Q. What settings should I use if I scan a photo?

You should use the "photo" scanning option. The resolution box should be set to high or 300 dpi. Avoid scanning your image above 300 dpi unless you plan on enlarging your image.  Make sure that both the scanner and the photo are clean and free of dust, lint, dirt, or other debris.  Once you have scanned your photo, compare the digital file with the original photo to make sure that it closely matches the original.  Still can't get the results you want?  Don't forget that you can always send your photo and Olympia Digital Imaging will scan it for you (a small fee may apply).
